I'm trying to install MSSQL 2000 on a virtual Windows 2003 instance. However, every time I run the install program, it fails to start the service. This is the error log:

Has anyone had this problem? Any ideas about how to fix it?

I would suggest that SQL Server simply isn't installing: there are no services to start or connect to...

However, the clue here might be "virtual": KB 327270

And you need at least SP3 to run on Windows 2003: what edition are you installing?

these errors are from the configuration portion of the setup, which doesn't say much other then not being able to connect to sql server & that the service doesn't appear to be installed. As the log suggests, you should look at C:\WINDOWS\sqlstp.log may be more helpful in determining why the services failed to install.

The error indicates that it is not able to login to the SQL server. See if the service is running under start -> control panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services. You should see an entry for MSSQL Server or SQL Server and it should be running. If it is not running then try to start it and then connect from a command prompt using

osql -E

If it won't start, try uninstalling and reinstalling SQL.
