gah, I just noticed, the lighttpd config is somehow corrupted. It was literally working fine 3 hours ago.

Starting lighttpd: Undefined config variable: var.home_dir
2010-08-29 17:29:31: (configfile.c.912) source: find /etc/lighttpd/conf.d -maxdepth 1 -name '*.conf' -exec cat {} \; line: 77 pos: 49 parser failed somehow near here: +

                                                           [FAILED]

any ideas? the line in question is

This line:

include_shell "find /etc/lighttpd/conf.d -maxdepth 1 -name '*.conf' -exec cat {} \;"

Has someone recently added a file to the /etc/lighttpd/conf.d directory, or edited one already there?

That is where the program appears to be choking, and immediately precedes the line you cite.

  • I think I have only added svn, git & rsync in the last couple of days and I doubt any of those would affect lighttpd.

undefined variable: var.home_dir, blurbs out your error message at the beginning.

What if you grep -ir "var.home_dir" /etc/lighttpd/conf.d? I think it will return some file containing that var.home_dir line. Just comment that out (or define it to contain something :) and see how your lighttpd starts to work again.

  • that came back nothing

  • How about 'grep -ir "home_dir" /etc/lighttpd'? Aug 30, 2010 at 8:56

The sample configuration file on the lighttpd web site includes these assignments near the top, which yours lacks. Obviously, they should be changed as appropriate for your directory layout.

var.log_root    = "/var/log/lighttpd"
var.server_root = "/srv/www"
var.state_dir   = "/var/run"
var.home_dir    = "/var/lib/lighttpd"
var.conf_dir    = "/etc/lighttpd"

This includes the variable to which Janne Pikkarainen and your error message allude.

turns out because I had the rpmforge repository installed my lighttpd updated to the latest version that was somehow incompatible with my virtual host config. I just removed rpmforge and downgraded to the epel version of lighttpd and all is now well. :D
