I'm scratching my head on this. I have New Relic tracking, and my log files on the server, but MySQL keeps stopping, and all I have is this when I check logs, New Relic has nothing. Only thing I'm seeing is the "Initializing buffer pool, size = 128.0M", am I just running out of memory?

errno 12 does indeed mean Cannot allocate memory, so you are running out of memory somehow. You should reduce your virtual machine's memory consumption or give it more memory.

  • Note sure how I could limit the VM, if a query runs a muck and all (Wordpress stuff).. Any options to auto start mysql if it crashes/stops, other than a mysql start running in cron?

You should actually figure out what the memory problem is and resolve it. Jun 20, 2014 at 1:26
  • @LeviXC The newer (within the last year) images on Rackspace don't have swap space allocated. You have to set it up if you want this sort of failure to have some temporary mitigation. In reality, it sounds like you need a beefier image. Jun 20, 2014 at 5:09
  • Thanks Kyle, thats good to know. For the time being I have started upgrading some of the images and I setup a shell script to kickstart mysql if it stops.

  • @LeviXC One very closely related thing not yet mentioned is that you should be running a 64-bit Linux. On 32-bit Linux, some of the kernel data structures may be allocated too small and result in this error, so that it isn't your program out of memory, but the kernel itself. Jun 30, 2014 at 13:13
