I have been trying to switch my server from mod php to fastcgi set up on an apache server running on osx (as a development machine). My problem is that php-fpm doesn't seem to processing the files. When I try to visit the pages the webserver simply passes them as a download. Previously it has both forbidden me from seeing pages and given me the pages as plain text. I tried setting up the server with nginx and I get the same problem. I have looked in the error logs for Apache and php-fpm. The apache error logs:

[Tue Jul 08 21:30:56 2014] [notice] FastCGI: process manager initialized (pid 1200)
[Tue Jul 08 21:30:56 2014] [notice] Apache/2.2.26 (Unix) mod_fastcgi/2.4.6 DAV/2 mod_ssl/2.2.26 OpenSSL/0.9.8y mod_perl/2.0.7 Perl/v5.16.2 configured -- resuming normal operations

And the php-fpm

The following is my apache httpd.conf file and vhosts file. Note that this is only one variant I have tried I have been on this for hours.

#

This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so 'log/access_log'
# with ServerRoot set to '/www' will be interpreted by the
# server as '/www/log/access_log', where as '/log/access_log' will be
# interpreted as '/log/access_log'.

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/usr"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

  • Do you have somwhere in your config the line LoadModule php5_module modules/mod_php55.so and: AddType application/x-httpd-php .php AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

My working config has this below the AddHandler line:

AddType application/x-httpd-fastphp .php
Action application/x-httpd-fastphp /fcgi/php-basic

and in DocumentRoot I have an executable file fcgi/php-basic containing

#!/bin/sh
PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN=1 PHPRC=/etc/php5/fcgi exec /usr/bin/php5-cgi

I've never played with this to understand fully why these components are needed; all I know is that it works!

Edit: as you realised during our chat, your Include statement for httpd-vhosts.conf was commented out as well.

  • I've never used php-fpm, but try it... and yes, the config above needs fcgi/php-basic to exist in DocumentRoot.

My impression is you're looking in the wrong direction.
You need to start php-fpm as a separate process and make it listen on TCP-port 9000. Than let your webserver (either Apache or nginx) connect to that port. Can you see if PHP-FPM is running by typing ps ax | grep fpm in a terminal?

Anyway, have a look at these tutorials:

To start PHP-FPM through the LaunchDaemon on OSX read http://verysimple.com/2012/12/06/install-php-fpm-on-osx-10-8-mountain-lion/

And finally some more in-depth stuff: https://github.com/humanmade/hm-dev/wiki/Setup-a-local-dev-environment-on-Mac-OSX-Lion
