I am trying to setup password-less ssh between google compute centos 6 instances. I copied the public of server-1 on to '.ssh/authorized_keys' of serer-2. I made sure all the permissions of .ssh folder and authorized_keys are correct.

When I try to ssh, it gives permission denied.

Permission denied (publickey,gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic).

Here is the stdout with verbose flag.

Help please. Are GCE machines authenticated using a different method ? Am I missing something ?

  • I fixed it. The remote root login was disabled.

  • for the security reasons using the root user is not recommended. That's why it's disabled for ssh.

You can use the gcloud command to connect to your GCE VM instance via SSH:

$ gcloud compute ssh INSTANCE_NAME

On the first run, this will create private/public keys (will put them in ./ssh directory of your user). For the subsequent connections between your VM instances you can simply use the command below:

$ ssh INSTANCE_NAME

For more information about this command take a look at the following article: gcloud compute ssh

  • Kamran, I needed password less ssh for root between the instances. I am already using gcloud compute ssh to connect from thin client. Thanks
