I have set the timeouts in nginx's proxy.conf to large values in order to download a large pdf. I suspect that this is not the right solution. What bad result could this have and is there a better alternative?

set the timeout only for location that produces the pdf? – sendmoreinfo Sep 10 '11 at 15:17
Which timeout value did you set this way? The previous suggestion of limiting where it applies is a good idea. The negative is that if it allows this for any/all HTTP sessions a malicious user could DoS your server using lots of 'slow' connections to exhaust your available connections. – Nathan V Nov 29 '12 at 4:56
