If you can afford the high price of the Windows 2008 Data Center edition license then you should be able to afford a few thousand dollars for a hardware firewall. – mrdenny Jan 27 '10 at 21:44

Well there is the built in (hence free) Windows Firewall - as always see the Technet pages. With its new advanced security MMC you can get pretty granular control over its settings.

But to be honest for a server, especially the Datacenter (seriously?) edition of Windows Server, software firewalls are a bit naff - you should really be using hardware firewalls, VLANs, ACLs etc.

i have no clue why think 3rd party packetfilters are better than the one shipped with the os. +1 – akira Jan 27 '10 at 11:34

I suggest running Security Configuration Wizard on Server Manager. It will harden your Windows 2008 Server security and lessen the attack surface. It takes care of automatically creating firewall rules based on installed roles and features.
