We are currently evaluating several vendors that will provide consulting on a large networking project. I have requested references from the final vendors, and now have some calls setup with these references (IT directors, network managers.)

What type of questions should I be asking of these references to get the most valuable information from them? I am hoping these will not be the typical "fluff" references with "everything went great, no problems, smooth install, etc".

At this stage you should be in a position where you have a reasonable amount of confidence and certainty that the vendors in the final group are at the very least competent enough to do the job. If it was me what I'd now be looking for is information on what they're like to work with. Can you establish good relations with them? Will their working methods fit in with yours, or will you be constantly at loggerheads over basic procedures?

Another critical question I always find useful here is what they're like when things go bad. Any fool can pull off a good job so long as everything is running smoothly, but it's when the sh-t hits the fan that the real talent comes out.
