I have a website hosting here in South Africa, but I am receiving terrible service from my hosting company. My database is down all the time and I cant get hold of anyone over weekends.

I would prefer a company in the USA to host it who will be available 24/7 for support.

Who would you recommend me using to host my ASP.NET site?

If you're looking to do it on the cheap, I've had really good experiences with DiscountASP.NET

If you can spend a lot of money on a dedicated server, Rackspace is pricey, but is worth it for the "fanatical" support. (A human picks up the phone within 2 or 3 rings, 24/7/365)

+1 I have tried both DiscountASP.NET and GoDaddy, I like DiscountASP.NET much better because GoDaddy runs under medium trust, which a lot of others do as well. – Jon Erickson May 25 '09 at 9:40
Jon, what does running under medium trust mean? What are the implications? – J. Pablo Fernández Jun 27 '09 at 15:31
I have tried discountASP, but I wasn't pleased at all. SQL server performance was ok, but their web server was way too overloaded. Even delivering a simple view via ASP.NET MVC could take anywhere from 2-10 seconds at peak times. And that's before I even had any live traffic on the site. Tech support was not willing to help, claiming it was a performance program with my application. For simple stuff such as a blog discountASP might be ok, but in my experience it's definitely not a good choice for any site you might earn a living with. – Adrian Grigore Mar 12 '10 at 15:23

Another resource for Web Hosting questions would be the venerable Web Hosting Talk. They have the forums broken down into type of host, and it looks like you'd most likely want a simple Windows Web Host rather than a more complex server setup. I'd suggest looking through there for more opinions on different hosts and their costs, benefits, and risks.

I recommend ServerIntellect. They have responded very quickly and politely to the few requests I've made.

Arvixe Web Hosting has .NET 4.0 and everything I wanted for a low price.

I use Hostek. They're fairly generic in terms of services but their support is great (even installing things to the GAC for me) and they're relatively cheap.

Servers aren't overloaded either.

And if you've got ~$50+ a month to spend, consider a VPS.

What is GAC??????? – Etienne May 24 '09 at 9:11
@Etienne: I think he means "Global Assembly Cache". – Moayad Mardini May 24 '09 at 9:26
I do. I needed a few third party things installing (because they didn't work in a medium trust setting). Lots of shared hosts will just tell you to shove it if you want things installing in the GAC. – Oli May 24 '09 at 11:10

I use APlus.Net. They have been really good and accommodating.

There's not a lot of hosting companies that focus on ASP.NET hosting out there. I am the CTO of one of the first Window's based hosting companies out there so I'm a bit biased, but there's many good hosting companies out there. I know it seems weird to recommend my competitors, but I know the owners and workers at the companies below and I can vouch that they all offer good products.

Applied Innovations
CrystalTech
DiscountASP

I recommend sticking with a host that focuses on .NET as they will be able to support you better.

One of the most important things you need to look for is what application pool limits the hosting company puts at the different plan levels. Make sure to call and ask if they don't publish it, it's very important, you don't want to get a cheap plan that won't suit the memory needs of your application and have to upgrade soon after the purchase.

If you don't want to spend much I've used Banana Hosting for small sites - prices start from around $3 per month including MySql/MsSql.

I am using Dreamhost and I never regret. Everything is fine. Today it has a 92% off offer. Register Sooon. You will just have to pay $9.24 for 1 year with domain name registration..

Dreamhost

Dreamhost's servers are Debian, so you'll be forced to use Mono if you want to host an ASPX site there- which seems dicey at best. – Tim Howland May 24 '09 at 21:04

If you're looking to have ASP.NET hosting on a budget (and also SQL Server database hosting), you could try:

WebHost4Life

For less than $10 USD per month you can get 100gig of disk space, apparently unlimited bandwidth and unlimited subdomains as well as a single MS SQL Server 2005 database (up to 2gig in size)!

I've been using ReliableSite.net for a few months, and I've been happy with them. Costs me about $10 a month, but they have some decent coupons available right on their site.

If you need MSSQL they also provide it quite affordably - a build-your-own-plan host, if you will.
