using the stsadm command I have been able to export a MOSS website and restore it on a different server which works fine. I tried the same for the shared services, it gave no errors, but it does not have all the import connections when I check around.

Is there a better way to export and restore shared services, or a way to synch the import connections and user list?

@vittocia: can you tell us the commands you used to backup and restore the SSP? Also - are you doing this to a new server in the same farm, or to a completely different farm? – MattB Mar 25 '10 at 13:42
to backup i use stsadm, then run the following command: C:\s.bat -o backup -url <URL of shared services> -filename c:\backups\20100312\sharedservices.backup s.bat contains the stsadm command "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN\stsadm" %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9 to restore: C:\backups\20100312>c:\s.bat -o restore -url <URL of shared services> -filename c:\backups\20100312\ -overwrite – vittocia Mar 25 '10 at 23:40
