I will be taking an independent study class on SQL server management. I will have to configure SQL Server 2008 on a Windows Server 2008 system. I was wondering if anyone could suggest decent text for configuration/administration of SQL Server 2008. The Murach text doesn't look like it will take me far.

Administration is a huge topic - can you be more specific for those who aren't familiar with the "Murach" text & aren't willing to google it? IE: Partitioning, failure recovery, backup... – OMG Ponies Mar 26 '10 at 16:15
I will be expected to install the SQL server software on a Windows Server 2008 machine to support a future database class for other people. I have to configure it for my local environment at the school, and provide scripts/tools for the management of the student databases. The Murach texts are mainly training manuals for various programming languages. I feel they don't get deep enough for what I will need to do. – Nick P Mar 26 '10 at 16:48
try asking this at serverfault.com, you'll get a better response there, as this is more of an admin question and less of a developer question – KM Mar 26 '10 at 21:00

Generally, I find the study guides for the relevant MS cert exams to be reasonable places to start. But since the books tend to only gloss over some of the subjects, while going into details in areas that aren't covered by the cert exams, they aren't all that hot for the actual purpose they were written for. To get the most out of them, do all the exercises and use the discount coupon in the back for the cert exam. The "pocket guides" tend to be useful when you're trying to figure out how to do X.

MS Cert exams for SQL Server 2008 administration include 70-432 and 70-450.
