This is a very generic piece of IT information that can be found with a simple web search or on a reference site like wikipedia. More specific questions that go beyond the basics are more appropriate for this site. Please see: catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html – Chris Thorpe Apr 21 '10 at 8:02

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. See the FAQ for guidance on how to improve it.

Well, 2003 Server or ANY Other server. Here is what I do - note hat I do use virtualization explicitely, so I have few physical server.

  • Boot drive is 2-3 RAID 10'd discs - mirror or stripe mirror.
  • A 64gb partition holds the operating system
  • The rest is named "Hyper-V" and under V ;)

That is it. Additional partitions are existing sometimes on other discs for high performance servers or large capacity - like a database server that has about 12 other discs physically mapped to it.

Virtual server use a 64gb boot disc - actually a delta disc to a master image - and get additional discs as needed (i.e. when the demand says so).

Some servers have additional raid 10 / 5 / 6 groups as needed, if in addition to hyper-v for example they also serve as file server. THis is pretty much the only stuff I allow - I do NOT install real software outside virtual machines, only operating system roles.

OS discs are either WD Scorpio Black 320gb (budget) or Velociraptor 300gb (performance), depending on the estimated load.
