Is it possible to make a backup of my Windows Server from the built-in Microsoft tool, but as long as my Hyper-V backups are stored safely and not backed up anywhere, I can still restore my Windows Server from the native backup and use the Hyper-v machines?

So if I lost my C:\ and my VMs are stored remotely, I can restore from an earlier backup and use those VMs.

Can you clarify? Are you trying to not backup your virtual server or asking a question about the best way to backup a virtual server? What do you mean by your Hyper-V backups are stored safely, how can they be stored safely, but not backed up anywhere? – Nixphoe May 1 '10 at 4:49

You can use windows server backup to backup Hyper-V too http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958662

If you are only backing up the HOST partition where you have installed the OS (C:) and if you do a full backup, select "Custom", then select the partition your OS is on (C:) and select the option "Enable System Recovery"

As long as you have installed the OS (W2K8) onto its default location, you would have full functionality when you restore onto the same or similar box.

Depending where your vms are restored, you should be able to backup the Hyper-V Vms too, Hyper-V VMs with no integration services or Linux vms will be put in a saved state while the backup is running.

Hope that Helps
