I've only compiled php itself from source,

how is php-cgi generated?

Add --enable-fastcgi and remove --disable-cgi from the parameters of the configure script as noted in the List of core configure options.

What's the name of the generated fastcgi executable? – apache May 5 '10 at 13:22
The binary is named php-cgi. – joschi May 5 '10 at 14:16
But I don't see that executable after make install – apache May 5 '10 at 16:30
Then check the output of configure and make – joschi May 5 '10 at 19:57
