When implementing an RBAC model using an LDAP store (I'm using Apache Directory 1.0.2 as a testbed), some of the actors are obviously mappable to specific objectClasses:

Resources - I don't see a clear mapping for this one. applictionEntity seems only tangentially intended for this purpose

Permissions - a Permission can be viewed as a single-purpose Role; obviously I'm not thinking of an LDAP permission, as they govern access to LDAP objects and attributes rather than an RBAC permission to a Resource

Roles - maps fairly directly to groupOfNames or groupOfUniqueNames, right? Users - person

In the past I've seen models where a Resource isn't dealt with in the directory in any fashion, and Permissions and Roles were mapped to Active Directory Groups.

Is there a better way to represent these actors? How about a document discussing good mappings and intents of the schema?

not trying to be trite, but based on JA's recommendation about tagging, I think there should be a tag for really old questions, especially ones that don't have answers. I thought it would make sense to tag a few of these so that people can look for those questions, give them attention, and get them answered. – Avery Payne May 10 '10 at 4:46

@Avery, with 6k rep you should know better... re-tagging something just to indicate that it's dead sticks it back at the top of the active list, when in fact it's not... Tags are used as meta-descriptors for the content of the question, not the status of it. – Mark Henderson May 10 '10 at 4:49
Thank you for playing the game, come again ;) That was the whole point, by re-tagging the question, it would "freshen it up a bit". It is also a bit of a double-entendre' (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_entendre) given that the meaning of the tag was to indicate it had not seen activity, but by tagging it, it will increase the chances of finding an answer. BTW, I'll remove the tag. (really wish there was a "preview" button for comments...) – Avery Payne May 10 '10 at 17:12
oh, and a comment +1 for pointing that out. :) BTW, the entire point of tags was (at one time) a bit vague, leaning more towards searchability rather than proper classification (see the first and third comment of the wiki here serverfault.com/questions/25415/…) – Avery Payne May 10 '10 at 17:13
