I have following laptops.

  • 2x Snow Leopard
  • 1x Leopard
  • 1x Tiger

I would like to backup these machines with Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server mini 2.66GHz and use the features like shared calendars and maybe video streaming (home media center).

Now I would like to know if the new mac mini can stand up to the job or if this recommendation is a total overkill? (No, there is no way I will buy an additional time capsule!)

Your Tiger machine doesn't have TimeMachine for Backup nor does it have the current iCal to share calendars via CalDAV. – tegbains Jun 19 '10 at 17:57
@tegbains: Thanks for the critical hint, didn't know that it isn't possible to use CalDAV under Tiger – elhombre Jun 19 '10 at 21:05

The mac mini will do a very good job for you. especially if you get the mac-mini preinstalled with snow leapard server.

A Mac Mini based server will be just peachy. The only thing I'd consider is whether or not the storage, less whatever you use for the other jobs, is adequate. It doesn't take much for a media centre library to start getting big.

Thanks for the response, so that means that it would be more adequate to create a separate media-center (HTPC for example) – elhombre Jun 19 '10 at 21:10
I've got a mac mini as a media centre in my front room, running Plex (plexapp.com) and its totally fantastic. The movies are stored on a NAS box in a "server cupboard" though. – DJ Pon3 Jun 19 '10 at 21:35
