We're trying to use Gmail for work, but our BlackBerrys are causing problems. By using the wizard, all mail comes in before Gmail filters are applied, which is something we can't have.

Using a workaround to add the same email account via as a normal IMAP account to the BlackBerry solves that problem, but since the BlackBerry thinks its normal IMAP, it puts the outgoing mail in the "Sent Items" folder. Gmail takes this and applies a "Sent Items" label to the email, instead of labelling it "Sent Mail". When we click on the Sent Mail link in the Gmail UI, the mail doesn't show up; we have to search for "Sent Items" to access it.

I understand that this problem is due to an IMAP spec being crossed with the non-standard folder handling of Gmail, and neither can be amended by a third party. So as another work around, is there any way of applying the "Sent Mail" system label to the "Sent Items" emails? Either via a filter (which would be fabulous!) or manually via a bookmarklet or something?

Well, GMail doesn't support BlackBerry. They provide configuration instructions, but that's it.

I don't think this is possible to solve. I just checked Filters under settings in GMail, and it doesn't allow you to tag a mail as sent.

Have you tried the "Enhanced Gmail Plugin" or the official Gmail app? Maybe those will help solve your filter issues.

We have a few users using Google Apps with their Blackberries as an emergency backup solution and they haven't had any Sent Items/Mail problems, but since it's an emergency-only tool, it may not get used enough for them to care (ie. no one has complained to me about it).

As another alternative, if you had everyone's login information, there are quite a few scripting libraries where you could do IMAP operations and copy the email from one folder to another. This seems like it would be terrible to maintain though.
