Win XP Pro, SP 3.

Trying to copy files from external USB hard drive (Bytecc USB SATA enclosure) to Optiplex HD, the desktop freezes and then the system reboots. There is no BSOD, therefore no minidump file for me to consult.

I have updated BIOS and drivers to the latest from Dell's site, and have added current drivers from Bytecc. Still have the problem.

I would appreciate suggestions about what else to try. Thanks!

run a hardware check through dell diagnostics. Sounds like bad ram. – pablo Feb 19 '11 at 20:19

You might consider booting into a CD-based OS in order to assist in determining if this is software or hardware based. Ubuntu and Knoppix are just a few which can operate fully within a CD boot, but allows you to manipulate files (copy, delete, etc.) as needed.
