Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

i have a core i7 workstation that acts like a basic server. it is always on, has ups battery etc. ocassionally while using it i have periodic 5 minute lock ups where the mouse and keyboard will not respond but do come back to life eventually. it is random when it happens.while it is locked i can ssh into the device and run commands without issue. it is a on raid 1 setup.

my question is how do i monitor it or look for the problem when it is in the state of intermittent lock? any suggestions for commands to run or tools to install that will log what is going on.

it is a core i7 with regular workstation motherboard and ram, using re4 sata hard drives and dedicated pci express based raid controller. the OS is 9.04 32bit workstation ubuntu. thanks.

/var/log/dmsg and message and see if anything wrong shows up. –  Prix Aug 8 '10 at 0:12
Random lockups for about 5 minutes on Core i7... I'm starting to see a pattern here... bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/665796 This one is on Ubuntu 10.10 and kernel 2.6.35. Are you using stock Ubuntu 9.04 kernel? Can you monitor /proc/interrupts using watch during these lockups and see if the timer interrupt is incrementing? –  Juliano Oct 29 '10 at 22:54
we did a few things to fix the issue, we disabled the hpet in the bios, we also turned off –  user8256 Oct 30 '10 at 11:59
