We rely on scheduled tasks, and schedule them using the GUI, using a service account. The server is Windows Server 2003 R2, Standard Edition, SP 2.

Every once in a while, the scheduled tasks don't fire. Often the "Last Run Time" shows that it thinks it ran, but nothing happens. I don't think it is the task itself as they will all fail.

The only thing we've been able to find to fix is to reboot the server.

Any hints as to what I should look at?

Have you checked the event logs for errors/warnings? – ChrisF Aug 18 '10 at 18:06
I've looked now, and don't see anything in the Application, Security, or System events that seem to relate. We did get some DCOM errors -- "The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {...} to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.". I'm not a Windows Admin, so I'm not sure what that means. Our programs don't directly call COM components. – Phaedra Aug 18 '10 at 18:29
Take a look at the scheduled tasks log for clues as to what's happening. You can access it from the Advanced menu in the Scheduled Tasks window. – joeqwerty Aug 18 '10 at 18:41
@joeqwerty... Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware of that log. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get to the log in time to see the appropriate time frame. – Phaedra Aug 20 '10 at 20:23
