Why are you trying to probe fellow student's computers? – Bart Silverstrim Aug 20 '10 at 11:28

Some schools have policies where scanning networks could be considered a violation of their computer usage policies. If you probe a honey pot on the network, they might not take kindly to it. – Joe H. Aug 20 '10 at 11:41
@Joe h.-My first suspicion is that OP is probing for some "clever" reasons that probably break multiple computer usage policies and/or sysadmin common sense rules. But that's just a suspicion. That's why I'd rather ask what he's doing since it doesn't sound offhand like he has a legit reason to be doing this. – Bart Silverstrim Aug 20 '10 at 12:08

you can use either arpwatch, or nmap

Just what I was going to suggest - except I suspect Infestor may be looking for SMB names - so the output of nmap would need to be scripted using smbclient – symcbean Aug 20 '10 at 11:26
