all the pages on my site are currently XHTML 1.1. Is there a good reason to change (or not change) the doctypes to HTML5?
TIA
Steven

This really belongs on doctype.com, unfortunately we can't move it there, so we'll have to close it. The main disadvantage I would see is that older browsers might not handle it correctly, but that's somewhat unlikely too. There are also a few tags in XHTML that are not in HTML5 (notably frames and a few miscellaneous tags). – Chris S Aug 22 '10 at 14:45
Wasn't aware of doctype.com, but I understand it belongs there. Just thinking: aren't we getting too many of these sites? Esp. since doctype has questions you might as well post on Super User or Stack Overflow. The forest for the trees, you know. Just my two cents – stevenvh Aug 22 '10 at 15:31

Questions on Server Fault are expected to generally relate to servers, networking, or desktop infrastructure, within the scope defined in the faq.

HTML5 is still very new. Many old browsers will not support the full HTML5 extensions. If your user base is fairly technical and keeps their browsers up to date, this shouldn't be much of a concern. If you have a mixed bag, you risk alienating all those users who don't live on the leading edge of browser technology.
