I am looking to have an unmanaged VPS hosting. and I have a few related questions:

  • Who offers such plans? (I know that site5 currently doesn't)
  • How much is it (usually?!) per month? (reasonable range?!)
  • What considerations might I use in choosing who to work with for such a hosting plan?

  • Any general tips/warnings on the topic would also be welcomed.

I know this question hold some place for subjectivity, and is a bit general - sorry. I tried to keep it as clean as possible.

Thanks.

p.s: why can't I make this a community wiki

vps.net or linode.com you can pay monthly or dayly usage, you should consider how long they usually take to answer to a ticket, what their uptime is, how long they take to replace a fault hardware. You must be aware that unmanaged VPS you must have knowledge over the system you choose and what you must do within it. I would like to point you to this article webhostingtalk.com/… regargind tests against those providers – Prix Aug 24 '10 at 20:54
This question looks very similar to serverfault.com/questions/808/… - you may wish to rephrase into something less subjective and more answer-able. – Kara Marfia Aug 25 '10 at 2:22

I use slicehost.com - never had issues with them in 3 years of usage, they're reliable and cheap. Also part of rackspace now. Roughly $20/month for a 256meg slice - not the cheapest out there but very flexible. If you decide to go with these please let me know and I can give you my referral address :)
