I am looking for a good image backup solution. I have a Windows Server 2003 file server that needs to have images done about every week or so. I do not think that 2003 server comes with such an option. I know that Since windows vista and up everything has had a full backup option. I've heard of Norton ghost, but does anyone have any other recommendations?

Thanks in advance

Can I ask why you think you need to image your server once a week? – GregD Aug 26 '10 at 13:50

What exactly are you looking for? A bare-metal backup solution? Or do you want to copy the HDs from one computer to another? Something else entirely? – Chris S Aug 26 '10 at 13:50

Clonezilla is a free solution which is capable of making images from HDs and writing them as well. They have a bootable CD image. It might not be ideal for your situation however, can you elaborate on what your trying to accomplish?

Check out O&O Software's server version of their disk imaging software.

This supports machine independent restoration (MIR), works with Microsoft Virtual Disks (VHD), works across the network and can be automated.

We use StorageCraft ShadowProtect here at work and we're reasonably happy with it. It has a lot of features like < 2 minute file recovery times, local mounting of images, Bare Metal Restore, etc that have come in handy. It can run across a network or on a local machine. You are also able to mount the images (with a bit of work) in a VirtualBox machine for easy VM deployment.

Like some previous posters mentioned though, it really depends on what feature set you need and what kind of budget you have. If you don't need backups to happen automatically and are on a tight budget maybe even Disk2VHD is an option.
