I've got a couple of customers who are using Backup Exec 2010 backing up to disk (and then copy to tape) using BE's implementation of PureDisk deduplicated storage. In all cases we're having regular issues, some extreme, with the reliability of this configuration even though it seems pretty straightforward to me. Exchange backups seem to be particularly troublesome, and Exchange GRT backups don't seem to work at all.

I'm just wondering if anyone here has successfully implemented BackupExec 2010 using deduplicated backup to disk storage with Exchange and if so is there anything specific that needs to be done to ensure that it is reliable.

Isn't the exchange filesystem (internal) already deduplicated? – Grizly Sep 2 '10 at 2:56
Partially and it depends on version - Exchange has dropped single instance storage completely as of 2010 and in 2007 and earlier single instancing only worked within the scope of each database. msexchangeteam.com/archive/2010/02/22/454051.aspx – Helvick Sep 2 '10 at 8:18
Good to know.. I guess you are using Exchange >2003 then.. ;-) – Grizly Sep 3 '10 at 4:33
