It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. See the FAQ for guidance on how to improve it.

sounds like you need split tunneling, which is where part of your traffic goes to the vpn , and the default for everythign else is your own route out to the net.

no idea what o/s your using, but assuming its windows, there's a setting in the vpn properties along the lines of "use vpn for all traffic". turn that off.

Im using Debian Sid. I need to enable "Use this connection only for resources on it's network" but to do that, don't I need to set the ip and dns info(i'll see if i can get that and try that) – user57005 Oct 13 '10 at 14:39
i believe that info is passed the vpn client at the time of connection. Normally, the vpn tunnel on your end is in the same network as their end, and the vpn server tells your client the information it needs to access those resources, including the ip, dns, and routing information. As far as i know anyhow, the vpn links ive done have been site-site ones. – Sirex Oct 13 '10 at 14:52
ok. I have it using the vpn only for resources on it network. not sure if it fixed it, because im on my schools wifi, and the services i need work on their wifi, and now that im split, im not sure if it is just pulling from that or if it is the vpn. – user57005 Oct 13 '10 at 16:11
any way I can force a command to be run through the vpn to test? – user57005 Oct 13 '10 at 16:12
