My daughter's HP Pavilion Entertainment laptop, about 3 years old, started acting funny today. She had been using it to do some work, and then closed it. Later when she tried to open it to get back to what she was doing, it wouldn't come up. She shut it down, and when she tried to bring it back up it started acting very strangely. The lights along the keyboard would flash on and off, and that is all it does.

So, what's causing it to do this and why? And what do I do about it?

Hi Rod, it looks like what you're asking is more related to Superuser.com than Serverfault. I don't know the answer but best of luck! – sscirrus Oct 14 '10 at 4:02
It is always hard to know which of these websites to post messages. I try to post it where I think it should go, but then someone else will send it someplace else. Oh well. – Rod Oct 14 '10 at 15:29

Questions on Server Fault are expected to generally relate to servers, networking, or desktop infrastructure, within the scope defined in the faq.

It may be due to a failed battery. A full "factory reset" (which will vary by manufacturer and model - check the manual or contact the manufacturer) may also help restore functionality (if it is not a failed battery).

It sounds like the battery is flat or has failed. Try plugging the charger in and switching the laptop on after the charger has been in for a few seconds

How do I determine if it is the battery or not? – Rod Oct 14 '10 at 15:37
Well, does the laptop work with the charger in and powered on? Does the battery hold charge? Pretty much the same way you'd investigate any battery powered device, really – Ben Quick Oct 14 '10 at 15:40
