We currently have a network of ~20 Linux/solaris machine that are using NFS with NIS.

Would like to replace the aging file server with a NAS box, something like Thecus, QNAP, or Netgear. They all support NFS; however, a common problem is that they only list LDAP/AD authentication... no mention of NIS. Anyone knows whether this is typically supported or not?

I also knows about openfiler, which does support NFS w/ NIS. But this would involve DIY HW, which I'm trying to avoid, if possible.

Woah, someone's still using NIS... serverfault.com/questions/192751/… – Ignacio Vazquez-Abrams Nov 2 '10 at 20:46
yup, NIS is still working. Truthfully, I'm not sure if some of those boxes can support LDAP, they're stuck running some leagacy app. – fseto Nov 2 '10 at 21:07
