Our internet speed is 8 mbps but our network is about 70 computers. I found two modems has 300 mbps speed capacity. Airties 5450 and a cisco modem. To buy one of them is waste of money. My internet connection can not pass 8mbit is not it ?

The speed of a DSL connection is limited by the condition and length of the loop, the frequency range of the modem, and the configuration on the DSLAM at the CO. Most likely the limitation in your case is the last one.

we applied for vdsl connection 32 mbit speed. They will test whether or not possible. If possible i hope the problem will be solved with vdsl supporting modem. – user59238 Nov 5 '10 at 20:09

Sounds like you're using DOCSIS Modems; the 300Mb one is the 3.0 standard's highest speed (1.1 is the most widely used; some places have 2.0; 3.0 is very rare; all are backward compatible). Your ISP sends a configuration file to whatever modem your using, telling it what your maximum speed should be; so having a modem that supports higher speeds isn't very useful.

However, newer modems have better "radio" equipment in them, that has lower SNR requirements (tolerates more noise on the line) and may give you improved quality of service (I have a client who ran into this; they were constantly getting slow service, but the modem appeared to be working; switched to a fancy new modem and they were able to hit their limit).

Simple Answer: If your connection would support 300Mbits you would probably have a modem supporting this bandwidth.

Bandwidth is a big factor when it comes to the price of your connection, so your ISP might support 300MBit Connections, but you will have to call them and upgrade your contract.

Just buying a bigger modem won't make your connection faster.

Edit

70 Clients = 8 clients per MBit = 14KB/s per Client.

Okay this sounds like we're back in the dark age. A simple solution: If you can't upgrade the line to more Bandwidth upgrade the number of lines. You just need a router with multiple WAN ports that supports loadbalancing like this one: Vigor 3300V

i live in turkiye unfortunately internet speeds are too slow. There is not vdsl or fiber optic support near our hostel. We have to use adsl. its maximum speed is 8mbit. I thought to change our modem because it is too old and can not response for too much request. – user59238 Nov 5 '10 at 13:06
if you only connect one client to the modem, can you max out speed (I guess 8MBit should work out around 900KB/s). If you can't get near this limit get a newer modem, preferably from your ISP. Otherwise leave it the way it is. – pacey Nov 5 '10 at 13:16

No.

Most likely it won't. Your speed depends on a number of factors, one of which is the "modem" at the ISPs end of the connection. They need to talk the same language, and that differs from generation to generation.

What modem are you refering to?

300 mb is for you internal connection speeds. if you want to have more broadband, pay more.
