When talking about licensing, it's always good to detail what's the type of use (production, testing, development, etc). – gtirloni Nov 12 '10 at 18:47

When you download Solaris 10 from the Oracle website for free, the license says that you can use it for:

  1. Developing
  2. Testing
  3. Prototyping
  4. Demonstrating your applications
  5. no other purpose!

If you want to use it in production, you must have a support contract.

The 90-day trial was dropped in all circumstances.

Yes, as far as I know, it has been Oraclefied and now costs money. Oracle loves to visit your wallet often.

Your hardware may include a license. Besides the Sun/Oracle hardware, Dell and others sell hardware with Solaris license options.

Of course there's always the open source version: http://openindiana.org/

I wouldn't use that for production until there's a stable release. It does seem to work well on my test boxes.
