I'm interested in a Infrant/Netgear X-RAID NAS

Is there another hardware or software solution where I

  1. Can add drives to the array
  2. Can keep the data on the original array

Edit:

looks like its called Online RAID Capacity Expansion and Online RAID Level Migration

Some devices that support it are QNAP,Thecus, this RAID Controller

I'm favoring a RAID Controller approach to reduce costs

Edit:

Linux supports Software RAID Growing which does the same thing, I think thats a cost effective solution

looking like its the readynas pro unless there's some software RAID that expands dynamically – Scott Cowan Apr 30 '09 at 10:19
I might go with the Adaptec 2820SA Controller – Scott Cowan May 1 '09 at 14:06
ok Adaptec 31205 in a 12 bay chasis any opinions? adaptec.com/en-US/products/Controllers/Hardware/sata/value/… – Scott Cowan May 1 '09 at 14:54
I've had the Veritas Volume Manager recommended to me for a software solution symantec.com/business/theme.jsp?themeid=sfbasic – Scott Cowan May 5 '09 at 16:16

I have an Infrant ReadyNas NV+ for nearly 2 years and it works great. An alternative to Infrant would be a Drobo + DroboShare - http://www.drobo.com

There is the Drobo but it is hobbled by the slow interface. I have a ReadyNAS NV that I have added drives to over the years and it's been nothing but rock solid for me. So chart up another vote for ReadyNAS.
