Server Fault is a question and answer site for professional system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm looking for a detailed (preferably official) feature comparison of 'R1' Windows 2008 Server.

  • Not interested in R2 cause we have 32-bit CPUs
  • This one on directionsonmicrosoft.com is not detailed enough, unlike a typical comparison table from MS
  • I wish to compare Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter.

I'm sure there is a copy somewhere, of the one appeared on the MS website.

Are there specific features you are wanting to know the differences in? It may be more efficient to pose those questions to serverfault and get the answer than to try to hunt down a list which may still not answer what you are looking for. Particularly if the features you are looking for may have had updates since launch, IIS 7 to IIS 75 for example. – Charles Dec 13 '10 at 17:02
Thanks for your suggestion Charles. However this time there is no specific function I'm after. I know all editions can do what we need primarily (web server and some custom server software), but we already have some spare licenses (quite a few =) so before the installation I just wanted to know what we can get with each edition and how it could help us in potential various tasks we may assign to the server. Weird that MS seems to have updated the documents rather than versioning them both for R1 and R2... I also know what each edition is aimed for, but just wanted to have more detail. – SuperDuck Dec 13 '10 at 17:47

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. For help clarifying this question so that it can be reopened, see the FAQ.

Thank you BoyMars, that was a nice try, wish it would have worked; all seems broken. – SuperDuck Dec 13 '10 at 17:53

A-ha! Some more deep search, and finally!

http://www.appliedi.net/blog/2008/02/27/windows-server-2008-is-released/

This one is exactly what I was looking for.

The final Google query that worked :
"windows 2008" editions compare standard enterprise datacenter -r2

PS:
It's a bad decision from MS, they should've archived this just like older versions, rather than updating the documents with R2, as R2 is not just an upgrade for 'R1', and 'R1' is the last release one can use for 32-bit machines.
