This isn't free, but it is very cheap and basic. Networking for Dummies is a great book for beginners. This will help you grasp concepts that beginners need to know. Here is a link to Amazon that is selling it for $16.49. I'm sure you can find an online version (possibly free) of it if you look hard enough though. UPDATE: I did a simple Google search for Networking for Dummies PDF and found it as an online free readable PDF (I took out the copyright protected link). It is findable if you look on Google. This should help you a lot.

This book
Computer networking first step by wendell odom that will give you a broad and fundamental knowledge. the book uses many analogies which are annoying, but the book works on a technical level despite them, and the material covered is good.
