Windows Live Mail has replaced Windows Mail (which, in turn, replaced Outlook Express). For various reasons, I need to be able to use the Mail Rules capability of Windows Mail - which appears to have "gone West" in Windows Live Mail. Specifically I need the ability to leave certain messages on the POP3 mail Server (hence I can't use Outlook since that ability seems to be missing in Outlook 2007).

Now, I found some blog posts on the web that suggested I should be able to just copy the Windows Mail folder (in Program Files) from a Vista System and overwrite the same folder in Windows7. I've done that but when I try to start Windows Mail (WinMail.exe) I get the message that that Message store can't be initialized. and that MSOE.DLL can't be initialized. Just before the MSOE.dll message I get an (0X8007007E, 126) message about the computer being out of memory or disk being full. This type of message is typically spurious and can usually be traced to a lack of access somewhere along the line.

I THINK, I have all the security "ducks in a row" but I'm still unable to run Windows Mail on Windows 7. I REALLY need to be able to. Can anyone suggest a foolproof mechanism to achieve this?

TIA, Paolo

Have you tried using process monitor to identify which functions are failing and/or returning Access Denied? technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx – Richard Slater Jun 8 '09 at 13:02

Paolo:

Windows Mail really does work in Win 7, but it can be a little touchy to get set up initially. I have received all the same error messages you did, but stick with it and you will succeed.

Try this: Delete all the files you have installed in the Windows Mail folder in Win 7; then copy them in again from Vista. Now click on Winmail.exe, and when it asks for the path to the message store, navigate to this location:

C:\Users\%Administrator%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail

(Supply whatever your Win 7 knows you as in place of the %Administrator% in the above path.)

Once WinMail has found its message store files--and they are there--it should run normally. Of course you will have to set up all your connection parameters again, just like you did when you first started using Windows Mail.

Best, RoswellC

It's not supported so the answer is easy - downgrade back to Vista.
