Inside the Virtual Machine ,running Ubuntu, I can ping outside machines and can even connect to the internet, but outside machines can not ping me except my host Windows machine,

The VMware Image use bridge mode and The IP of the Ubuntu is get from DHCP.

What could be catchy here and how to diagnose it? Thanks.

Are you sure its bridged? Try turning off windows firewall, is it a fresh install of ubuntu? Also just to clarify outside machines are machines on the same network as your windows box, correct? Try pinging by IP not your ubuntu VMs hostname, to make sure DNS isnt the problem. –  Flamewires Jan 12 '11 at 5:55

Yes, it is bridged. It is not a fresh install but a image copied from another guy. it works well on his machines but difference is I am using vmplayer but he is using vmware workstation. –  pierr Jan 12 '11 at 6:03

Maybe a wrong route in Windows ? Could you send the routes / ips ? –  Nikolaidis Fotis Jan 12 '11 at 7:48

If you copied the image from another guy, make sure you don't have the same MAC address as he has on his. That can cause all kinds of fun networking issues. –  B. Riley Jan 13 '11 at 17:31
