I'm currently using a Linksys E2000 with dd-wrt. I'd like to add DansGuardian for Content Filtering and snort-inline for IPS; but those require a more powerful box (mainly, more storage). Can you recommend a good device to use?

I'm open to both overwrite-the-firmware (like dd-wrt) and designed-to-be-customized boxes.

Requirements: 1. 5+ Ethernet ports, pref. GigE 2. small form factor 3. No noise (office environment) 4. low power 5. Not sure about 802.11 wireless

Budget < $400, pref. less.

Have a look through this list on wikipedia List of Firewall Distros. Choose one of them and get some hardware that will do what you want. You can maybe buildup an Atom based machine to meet your desired specs.

at one point I used IPCop on a P3. I had a second one lying around that had an image of the production one just in case. The whole thing cost me about 60$ and some time. It was used for 60 heavy users.

Thanks. I know of distros: I'm looking for hardware which fits the form facter of a SOHO router that can run a distro with a large disk space requirement. – SRobertJames Jan 16 '11 at 19:21
@SRobertJames, in that case you seriously need to rewrite the question because that point is anything but clear. Incidentally, there is no single form factor for SOHO routers, which vary from tiny little plastic boxes upwards. You really have to be clear about what you're asking. – John Gardeniers Jan 17 '11 at 1:08
I didn't get that either from the way the above was written. But to get more features, you will need more HW. Have a look at the various Linux mags at you local store. I don't remeber of any specific model, but they do list the sometimes – cwheeler33 Jan 17 '11 at 6:21
