These SCSI hard disks (4.3Tb total) were pulled from a decommissioned EMC storage array. The obvious use would be 200 very strong fridge magnets... but there may be a more dignified way to retire them? (That is, short of just throwing them into a dumpster!) Any hints?

What do they weigh? Presumably there's salvage value in the aluminum frames, but depending on the weight it may not be worth even bothering.

Personally, I'd go for the 200 very strong fridge magnets. Get an old refrigerator and get to sticking.

Alternatively, bolted to a big piece of wood with all the covers removed, cabled into a controller with some random IO being ran against them = pretty cool display wall. – Chris Thorpe Feb 10 '11 at 4:50
@Chris Thorpe: your idea has a certain appeal! – NevilleDNZ Feb 10 '11 at 6:06
or a coffee table, under one sheet of glass all thrashing away. :) – Sirex Feb 10 '11 at 8:03
Hmm... with USB to SCSI adapter, a 16 drop SCSI cable, and silicone sealant to attach the drive to the underside of a glass coffee table... A ½TiB USB Drive Coffee Table seems very plausible. It's a shame that silicone sealant's fumes contain acetic acid. :( Maybe araldite is fumeless? :) – NevilleDNZ Feb 10 '11 at 10:42
