I'm using Backup Exec 12 to try and restore some old tapes that were encrypted. I have a BE trial installed on an old machine trying to recover data from these old LTO4 tapes. When I attempt a catalog operation, it says "the encryption key required by this set cannot be retrieved, go to Tools->Keys and create a key using the same encryption type and passphrase." When I do this, I can't figure out how the catalog job knows that it should attempt to use this key. Even when I've already created the key, the catalog operation still prompts with the same error/alert every time.

How is this supposed to work? Am I doing something wrong?

Are you using the same encryption type and passphrase as the original that was used to encrypt these tapes? – joeqwerty Mar 1 '11 at 19:53
I believe so -- but the error message never indicates a problem with the key... It just doesn't acknowledge that it's there in the first place. (this is a typical bad IT organization problem: old IT guy set this up with no documentation, and I don't have the original keyfile - but I think I know the password that was used...) – colemanm Mar 1 '11 at 20:06
