Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

So after a lot of frustration, I finally got WAMP server to work. I can access my webpage both from computers in my local network using the ip address of my machine the server is hosted on and also on the internet by using my WAN ip address.

So is it important to set up virtual host to tie multiple websites into my server? I know I can always have people type in ip/page1.php or something to route them to the right page.

As for Domain name, I know you have to buy a domain name before you can use it on the internet. So is it also important to buy a domain name and set up DNS using the domain name?

I am fairly new to all this networking, and don't know about setting up VH or DNS/buying domain names. I do have a nifty guide I am following.

I was just wondering if these are important to set. I only want to use this website to host a few different pages, which will just fetch information from a MySQL database based on the query run by the user. SO I was wondering if I can squeak by for now, but I do plan on setting them up in the future.

Don't use WAMP (or any other pre-packaged one-click installer) packages for anything other than local developement. They're not intended for production use, and when exposed to the public internet, you're just asking to get hacked. –  EEAA Apr 5 '11 at 2:57

If you are looking to host (vs. just doing local development), you will need to do the following:

  1. Buy a domain name from a registrar.
  2. Using the registrar, set up the DNS by creating an "A" record for your domain to point to your public IP address.
  3. Log into your router and "port forward" port 80 WAN to port 80 LAN of the system WAMP is running on.
  4. Make sure your firewall software is not blocking incomming port 80 requests.

You can run into some issues here such as not having a "static" IP address (every couple of days your ISP assigns the cable/dsl/etc modem a new IP address).

So is it important to set up virtual host to tie multiple websites into my server? I know I can always have people type in ip/page1.php or something to route them to the right page.

If you want to host multiple websites each on it's own domain name, you will need multiple VirtualHosts.

I was just wondering if these are important to set.

Very importand unless you don't mind using an IP address instead of a domain name.

You should try the different wamp packages and see if one meets your needs beter than others such as XAMPP, WampDeveloper Pro (not free), easyPHP, etc.
