I am new to servers, hardware, and the specifications of them. I am interested in learning about server hardware.

More specifically, servers to host web applications.

I have a very basic understanding of the concept of a server.

Please tell me how you went about learning about servers, hardware, etc.

I am by no means the worlds best hardware expert, but I learn an awful lot from simply reading stuff here on Server Fault. – Ben Pilbrow Apr 18 '11 at 22:44

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. See the FAQ for guidance on how to improve it.

I think a lot of the people here on serverfault have gained a lot of their knowledge by lots of reading and then trial and error.

You can get a second hand entry-level server for a few hundred dollars (or pounds) from ebay, and then just start experimenting (in your home environment). Once you are fairly sure that your server does what you want it to do, find yourself a hosting company nearby and have it hosted. That will give you exposure to the public Internet and a whole new load of things to figure out.

Two things are guaranteed:

  • it will cost time and money
  • it never stops
