The hosting company I'm talking to said that it would be difficult to manage a VPS without prior experience and training.

IF can't afford a managed VPS, what do I need to learn to manage my own VPS and where can I learn it?

This is sort of like telling us that you can't afford a mechanic so you want us to tell you everything you need to learn to work on your car and where to get that information. The question is too broad. We might be able to steer you a bit if you tell us what OS you'll be running and the applications that will be on that server but don't expect that you're somehow going to be a server administrator overnight. – icky3000 Apr 29 '11 at 6:13
Please abandon this idea. An inexperienced person putting a live server on the Internet is a sure road to disaster. If it was as easy as you apparently expect it to be most of us would be out of a job. – John Gardeniers Apr 29 '11 at 11:44
@John Gardeniers you're a bit of a fool, aren't you. I never said I expected it would be easy, did I? Furthermore, I'm not putting a server on the internet as an "inexperienced person." I'm asking what to read to learn how to do it. If someone were to ask me how to learn what I need to learn about areas that I have expertise in, I could easily refer them to resources to start learning. – Michael Apr 30 '11 at 9:02
So, you actually think you can learn to do this by reading a few articles, yet you call me a fool. Server administration can't be learned that easily and no matter how much you read you will still be completely inexperienced. However, I see from your profile that you're egotistical enough to think otherwise. – John Gardeniers May 1 '11 at 6:50

Administering a VPS is similar to administering a regular server. If you have those skill-sets to administer a server, you are already about 80% there. The last 20% are the little caveats that you need to learn about VPSes depending on the infrastructure platform.

e.g. I/O infrastructure, networking etc.
