I've got the following arrangement set up:

Wireless Modem/Router/Switch --> Router 1 (LAN to LAN)
Wireless Modem/Router/Switch --> Router 2 (LAN to LAN) with:

Wireless Modem/Router/Switch

  • Static IP: 192.168.0.1
  • DHCP: enabled
  • WiFi: disabled

Router 1

  • Static IP: 192.168.0.2
  • DHCP: disabled
  • SSID: test
  • Security: WPA2/AES
  • Channel: 6

Router 2

  • Static IP: 192.168.0.3
  • DHCP: disabled
  • SSID: test
  • Security: WPA2/AES
  • Channel: 11

On my Macbook and iPhone I get full bandwidth (40Mbps) wirelessly, but on my Acer laptop I only get around 2Mbps, which is awful slow. Both my Macbook and iPhone also switch automatically between the two channels, but my Acer doesn't. I'm wondering if my arrangement is incorrect? I cannot hook up both routers through a LAN to LAN connection, because they're too far away from each other. Thanks upfront for your effort.

If you want to extend the range of a wireless connection, you need a wireless extender or a bridge. Generally speaking, if you just have the routers set up to use the same SSID and not let them know that they're not supposed to be the "primary" AP, it won't work right. Coverage of 2 different channels should be done by 2 routers who are aware that there is an "associator" and a second one.

I don't see anything immediately wrong with your setup. You wont be able to migrate between them (when you leave one's range it will not gracefully transition to the next, but will disconnect/fail then find the other AP). This isn't usually a big deal as most people don't move around with their laptop too much.

More likely than not the WiFi chipset in the Acer is "cheap" and doesn't play nice with the higher quality chipsets. I've seen this quit a bit in chips from the 802.11b to 802.11g transition days. Most of the newer chipsets are tolerant of the quirks in other chips.

How old is the Acer laptop and what chipset is it using?
