Inspired by the "cheat sheets for syadmins" here at SF, I would like to start a collection of good examples of how to use the Amazon "Free Usage Tier" t1.micro instance.
Besides experimenting and gain experience with AWS/EC2/EBS (e.g. using tools like Puppet and/or Opscode Chef), how do you use your specific instance and with what setup?
Here are some I've used or found to get started:

Please add your favorite(s) plus links and documentation if available.

you should make this into a community wiki, Henk. – gravyface May 13 '11 at 19:03
@gravyface Only mods can make something CW anymore. – Holocryptic May 13 '11 at 19:11
As it is, I feel this may be too localized a question, since this is based on a commercial service offering that may not be here down the road (stretch as it may seem) – Holocryptic May 13 '11 at 19:12
Have a wiki. Enjoy. – sysadmin1138 May 13 '11 at 19:22

Use

If you're an IRC junkie, you could always keep your IRC client on the server and SSH into the machine to use it.

Advantages

  • Fewer disconnects
  • Available from anywhere with an internet connection (eliminates nickname-work, nickname-home, nickname-phone, etc)
  • Consistent logging of channels, if that's something you care about
  • Consistent presence in a channel, so if someone wishes to message you, they don't need to go through MemoServ or know your email address.

Disadvantages

  • Some people dislike text-based IRC clients like irssi or BitchX.
  • May be against your service provider's TOS (It isn't against Amazon's AWS TOS, but I'm leaving this here for anyone looking for info on cheap VPS instances)
  • Some people may incorrectly assume that you're always on IRC and get impatient when you don't respond to them because you're sleeping or something.

use an irc bouncer instead of your client.. THen you just connect to the bouncer and you are all logged in and you get the playback from when you weren't connected – Mike May 13 '11 at 22:24

Network toolkit box with iperf, nmap (be careful), stunnel, ssh, rsync, etc.
