we install a linux server and a windowsXP client in a virtual box then we connect it through a internal network connection then we install dhcp and dns. My problem is i can ping each other through an ip address but I can't ping it through dns? what should I do?

you must not have ddns setup correctly or you didn't create a dns entry for your devices. – tony roth May 16 '11 at 2:12

@Tony, already mentioned that problem, thanks for poaching. @angel, this site is for System Administrator Only. This is not a site for beginners. – Chris S May 16 '11 at 4:17

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. For help clarifying this question so that it can be reopened, see the FAQ.

Linux boxes don't respond to NetBIOS name resolution natively. Try the recommendations on this site and see if it helps. In short, you need samba and winbind.

Ahhh, drive by downvoters. How quaint. – Holocryptic May 16 '11 at 2:10
you've made an assumption that he cares about netbios! – tony roth May 16 '11 at 2:14
@tony roth If I made an assumption, it's because it's frankly a crappy question that I made some attempt to answer. I guess next time I'll just keep my mouth shut and vote to close. – Holocryptic May 16 '11 at 2:16
I'd agree that it wasn't the best question but you get what you pay for on this site! – tony roth May 16 '11 at 2:17
@tony roth either way, there's a strong possibility based on the little info there is that my suggestion would fix the problem, even if it's not what you would do. So downvoting based on the fact that it's not how you personally would do it is kind of bad form. – Holocryptic May 16 '11 at 2:21
