Our ISP has provided us a DSL connection which is shared. We have a domain running on Windows Server 2003. Our server has 192.168.0.1 as the IP address. When we connect the DSL on the domain we get an IP conflict. When we contacted the ISP they said that we have to change our server IP to 192.168.1.83. They have also given us the preferred DNS and alternate DNS addresses.

Is there any way I can avoid changing my server IP address as I also have to change the IP addresses of all the clients.

You cannot have duplicate addresses in the network, period.

If you cannot change the IP address of the router or persuade your ISP to do so, then you have to change the IP address of your server. Tertium non datur.

Don't see why you wouldn't be able to change the IP of the router, this is the private IP after all, not the public IP issued by the ISP. – James Yale May 16 '11 at 9:03

How is your 2003 server connected to the DSL? Is it via a modem/router, or just via a modem and a PPP connection set up within Windows?

If it's a PPP connection from within windows (i.e. in Network Connections you have your LAN and a dial-up connection that's used for the ADSL), and 192.168.0.1 is the IP address of the actual WAN link (issued by carrier-grade NAT), then you're out of luck.

Otherwise, if you're using a modem/router, then you just need to change the IP address of that device to say, 192.168.0.2 (or another free, spare IP address on the network) and you're good to go.
