SCOM will only discover and monitor network devices on the same subnet as the management server. SCOM is able to discover and monitor servers and clients on different subnets. SNMP and ACLs are configured properly on each device and the device can be pinged from the management server. How do I configure SCOM to discover and monitor these network devices?

Your first sentence says "can only discover devices on the same subnet". Your second sentence says "is able to discover servers on different subnets". So, can it do it or not? Or, am I not understanding your usage of "device" vs "server" ? – Aaron Sep 8 '11 at 22:54
What does it say in the manual? – SpacemanSpiff Sep 8 '11 at 22:59
are they in the same domain/trust? If not, you need to setup a gateway server. – gravyface Sep 8 '11 at 23:43
I should of been more clear. When I say network devices I mean routers and switches that use SNMP to communicate with SCOM. I think I know the answer to my own question. SNMP is not a routable protocol by default. I think if I enable routing of SNMP traffic on my routers it should resolve the inability of SCOM to communicate outside the SCOM servers subnet. – Lance Jensen Sep 9 '11 at 13:51
SNMP is absolutely a routable protocol - it uses IP and either UDP or TCP and can traverse networks with no problems. – Aaron Sep 9 '11 at 17:45
