I have had a user unable to send external e-mails, getting the following error message from exchange:

The message could not be delivered because the recipient's destination email system is unknown or invalid. Please check the address and try again, or contact your system administrator to verify connectivity to the email system of the recipient.
            <mail.domain.local #5.1.2>

However, another user has no problems sending to the same e-mail address.

They have tried a number of times to send the e-mail...

I did have a quick google and make sure the domain name they are sending to resolves on the exchange server - not sure what else to look at...

Double check that they are sending to an valid email address. Often I see people sending stuff to internal email addresses (ie some.name@domain.local) – Nixphoe Jun 6 '11 at 12:50
The domain is valid, the domains are googlemail.com and live.co.uk (I don't think there will be any issues with the mail server being up! ;) – Matt Jun 6 '11 at 13:09
What version of exchange do you have? Do you have any kind of anti spam, like barracuda, that could be blocking emails going out unless you set them up on that device (usually you only see that for smaller offices)? – Nixphoe Jun 6 '11 at 13:59
Using Exchange 2003 - No spam filter in exchange - we use postini (aka google) to manage our mail filtering - all incoming and outgoing mail pass through their servers - We just forward all SMTP traffic there way. I don't think it is anything to do with this as other mail is getting out. – Matt Jun 6 '11 at 14:38
