I'm working with a small web startup and have kinda fallen into the role of Server Admin/DB admin for our Amazon EC2 instance, but have never actually done this before. What sort of things should I know if I'm going to be hosting a legitimate site and what kind of things should I be doing? Both in terms of security, as well as just the simple maintenance tasks. I'm pretty experienced with linux and such, but I'm just looking for general advice.

Probably the single most important thing for anyone pretending to wear a sysadmin hat is BACKUP. If you don't have decent backups then you will eventually find yourself totally screwed. A couple of broad suggestions would be to find out what technologies are relevant to your company and industry and start becoming intimately familiar with them. Setup your own AWS free micro instance so you can freely play with the tools amazon provides without disturbing your production environment. And please for the love of all things precious to you...backup your everything. | |||
