Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. It's 100% free, no registration required.

My VPS suddenly started behaving strangely.

  • I cannot SSH to my VPS.. I use Tunnelier and it says "Toterm Error: Connection Attempt Failed. Reason Windows Error 10061: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it."

  • I cannot access PHPmyadmin. When I type www.mysite.com/phpmyadmin, Firefox shows a blank page (Url says: Cannot start without errors). Chrome opens the PHPMyadmin Login page, but when I try to login the page simply redirects back.

  • Couple of hosted sites are throwing DB Errors, Couple are working Fine , while couple have gone down.

My hosting company dont seem to have a clue on this. I tried google but not find any thing relevant

What could be the problem.. Did someone hack into my server, it is a hardware failure... How can I resolve this?

Edit: Thanks for the advice.. I will ask my hosting company to reboot the server.. It uses Fedora , I cannot recall the version though

Update: The server had crashed and my hosting company was unable to fix it. They couldn't even reboot it..What's more they did not take any backups and I lost all my data :(

Best guess is the server ran out of memory, killed some processes to keep the OS alive, and is now only half working, I suggest you get your hosting company to reboot it, or reboot it via the control panel if you have one. By the way, you might want to mention what OS your server is running ... –  EightBitTony Jun 21 '11 at 20:55

Is rebooting the box out of the question? Your VPS might have the ability to do this through a control panel. –  Pratik Amin Jun 21 '11 at 21:28

After rebooting (I don't think you have a choice about that) don't forget to check the server logs for some clues about whatever caused this. –  John Gardeniers Jun 21 '11 at 22:42

Sometimes when a box starts acting completely strange, the best thing to do is reboot it - it might solve the problem right away, or you might just end up spending a lot of time digging and find nothing conclusive.
