I am not sure if this is the best place to ask this but I will give it a shot. I have always seen that you could use (and is recommended that you) use Terminal Timing over a EIA-530 serial link because of delays and phase shift over long cables. I can understand the delays from equipment depending on what it is and also I know about other uses (DCE-DCE "cross-over", CDS, and other such things). What makes sense but I have yet to experience is phase shift over long cable distances. Is there an arbitrary length where you start seeing enough phase shift to cause errors?
